Investing in higher education ministries that have the potential, capacity, and commitment to reach new people

Overview: The Minnesota Annual Conference Higher Education Action Team (HEAT) has limited funding available to assist campus ministry units and congregations in ministry with college students with financial needs. The intention is that grants will be awarded to new ministries or existing ministries engaged in new initiatives that demonstrate the potential, capacity and commitment to reach new people, grow in love of God and neighbor and heal a broken world.

Funded ministries will address critical issues related to college students in their local context, with an eye toward spiritual development as a necessary component of academic, emotional, relational and personal development.

Funding Preferences: HEAT’s funding preferences are for the following:

United Methodist related Campus Ministries located within the Minnesota Annual Conference geographical area. Ministries functioning within a local United Methodist church and serving as a bridge between the students and the local church congregation. New ministry initiatives or expansion of existing ministries.

The Higher Education Ministry Grants process includes two funding paths.

  • Grants of $100 to $25,000
  • Renewals of previous grants – possible but not guaranteed for up to two additional years, and usually for declining amounts encouraging self-sufficiency of the ministry.

Higher Education Ministry Grant Criteria

All higher education ministry grant applicants are required to:

  • Provide a clearly articulated, bold, strategic plan to reach students, and fulfill the gospel imperatives of reaching new people, growing in love of God and neighbor and healing a broken world.
  • Utilize the grant funds for ministry efforts such as programs, resources, events, staffing, etc. Minnesota Conference Higher Education Ministry Grant funds may not be used to underwrite alternative mission trips/experiences, general church staffing or church wide programs/events that are not specifically targeted to students.
  • Provide a clearly articulated, detailed strategic plan for diversifying funding sources to grow, maintain and steward the campus ministry financials.
  • Submit regularly scheduled “Benchmark Reports” to document fruitfulness of the campus ministry’s bold, strategic plan throughout 2019.
  • A congregation must pay 100% of their apportionment in the year(s) they receive the grant.
  • This is a one-year grant. The ministry may apply for a renewal of their grant for an additional two years (3 years total), but renewals are not guaranteed. Higher Education ministry grant awards are not designed to be sustaining sources of funding. Monies are intended to implement or increase capacity for intentional discipleship.
  • To be considered by the granting team, the grant application must be accompanied by requested documentation, the approval of the pastor and church council of the local church or the Board of the Campus Ministry/Wesley Foundation, and the recommendation of the district superintendent, and must be submitted electronically by the deadline to be considered by the granting team.
  • Those organizations receiving more than $2500 will receive their grant in two installments and must complete a mid-year report. Remaining funds of the grant will be disbursed based on progress reported in the mid-year evaluation report.
  • A ministry may be awarded additional funding after 3 years (first year award + two additional renewal years) if the ministry can demonstrate that they are moving toward financial sustainability, have raised matching funds and/or are implementing a new ministry initiative.
  • Grant recipients will be expected to participate in activities, meetings or events organized by the Higher Education Action Team for the purpose of building the connectional relationship between entities engaged in campus ministry in the Minnesota Annual Conference.
